MAKGADIKGADI
PANS
Makgadikgadi Safari Camps
The Makgadikgadi salt
pans are one of Botswana's most interesting and
unique landscapes available to safari travelers. The
pans are the remains of an ancient super-lake that
covered 80,000 square kilometers, actually much
of southern Africa, before it dried up thousands
of years ago. The landscape has been compared
to the moon; however, for a few months every year,
the rains transform the Makgadikgadi into one of
Africa's most important wetlands. The pans
fill with water and attract thousands of flamingos
and a myriad of migratory birds. The fresh
grasses also attract southern Africa's last remaining
migration of zebras and wildebeests.

Jack's
Camp
Jack's
Camp, established by the late Jack Bousfield
in the early 1960's, offers an authentic Kalahari
desert experience, very different from
the safari camps of the Okavango and Chobe. The
camp is a lovely oasis amidst the harsh environment
of the pans.
Jack's Camp
is designed and furnished as a traditional
1940's -style safari camp, providing maximum
comfort with style and elegance. Jack's
accommodation consists of eight large, walk-in
tents with en-suite bathrooms plus indoor
and outdoor showers.
The activities
here are focused on the desert-adapted life
the somehow exists here, plus the geology
and natural history of the Makgadikgadi region. Quad
biking adventures out on the salt pans are
exhilarating and walks with the San Bushmen
provide insights into their ancient culture
and survival skills. Wildlife here
includes the adorable meerkats and the Brown
hyena. Lions, zebra, wildebeests and
many less common bird species are also present. |

San Camp
San
Camp is located on the edge of the main Makgadikgadi
pan (Ntwetwe Pan), not far from Jack's Camp. San
Camp is smaller and a bit more rustic than
Jack's and perhaps more traditional in its
feel. The design of the camp is stylish
white canvas amongst a grove of tall palms,
giving it a Persian elegance.
San Camp accommodates
guests in six large, walk-in tents made of
white canvas, each with seemingly endless,
sweeping views onto the pans. The bathrooms
are en-suite with bucket showers and bush
toilets.
Activities
here are similar to those at Jack's, giving
guests a full understanding of the environment
and anthropological history of this interesting
region of Botswana. Quad biking is
available in the dry winter months and the
migration of zebras and wildebeests is an
amazing, seasonal highlight. Guests
may also walk with the San Bushmen to learn
their ancient secrets of survival and take
an excursion to see the historic and immense
Chapman's baobab tree. |
