SAFARI
REGIONS of BOTSWANA
Safari Destinations in Botswana
Botswana offers an amazing
array of choices for visitors on a Botswana Safari. Each
region offers its own unique mix of wildlife, landscapes
and safari activities. A visit to every region
during a single safari may take more time than
most travelers can spare in one trip, but we suggest
visiting at least two of the regions and possibly
three depending on your schedule.

Okavango Delta
Botswana's
Okavango Delta is perhaps its most famous and spectacular
region for safari adventure. It is widely
considered to be Africa's top wildlife destination
and certainly one of the world's last remaining
wilderness sanctuaries. The
animal life here is prolific year-round and its
large, private safari concessions provide guests
with an intimate and private safari experience. |

Moremi Game Reserve
In
the heart of the Okavango Delta lies the Moremi
Game Reserve, a region where all the major habitats
and animals of the Okavango are conserved and
protected. Some
of Botswana's most luxurious wetlands and arguably
its highest density of predators occur in the
Moremi. Chief's Island, the largest island
in the Delta, is situated in Moremi and Moremi's
famous Mombo Camp offers some
of the finest game viewing in all of Africa. |

Linyanti Wildlife Reserve
Situated to the north
of the Okavango, the Linyanti Reserve offers
marshes, waterways, riparian forests, dry mopane
woodlands and lush grasslands. The now-dry
Savuti Channel begins in the Linyanti and its
grasses attracts large herds of zebra, buffalo
and wildebeest, along with a host of predators. This
is an enormous area (125,000 hectares) and its
wilderness offers amazing wildlife safaris. The
Linyanti also boats some of the densest concentrations
of elephants in Africa. |

Makgadikgadi Pans
Botswana's Makgadikgadi
Pans are the remnants of an ancient "super" lake
that once covered over 30,000 square miles before
it dried up 10,000 years ago. However,
the normally dry pans still sustain life including
meerkats, brown hyenas, lions and southern Africa's
largest migration of zebras and wildebeests. After
the rains, the pans fill with water and become
a breeding ground for enormous flocks of flamingos
and other migratory birds. |

Chobe National
Park
Botswana's Chobe National
Park is Botswana's most visited area and is also
the most diverse of all Botswana's safari areas. Chobe
is home to large herds of elephant, buffalo and
zebra, plus large numbers of lion, leopard, hyena
and even cheetah. Chobe offers several
distinct regions: the Chobe riverfront, the Savute
Marsh, the eastward continuation of the Linyanti
swamps, and the dry lands in between. The
Savute area of Chobe also boasts high concentrations
of predators and is on the path of the annual
zebra migration. |

Central Kalahari,
Khutse and Kgalagadi
The
Central Kalahari Game Reserve and its adjoining
Khutse Game Reserve are far less developed
as a safari destination but offer a superb
wilderness experience for those interested
in seeing some of Botswana's drier environment. The
Kalahari, named for the desert in which it
is situated, is home to the last of the traditional
communities of the "Bushmen."
Further south,
and straddling Botswana's border with South Africa,
lies the pristine wilderness of the Kgalagadi
Transfrontier Park. This
park is almost completely free of human habitation,
with lovely red sand dunes and a large diversity
of wildlife and flora. The park offers
self-drive camping and a few rest stops with
cottages. |
