TULI REGION
Tuli Region Safari Camps
At the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo rivers is a land of big vistas, big skies, giant trees and great herds of game. Rich in history and mythology, it is a place where the present echoes with footsteps of the past and stirs the imagination, making it difficult to leave and impelling one to return.
The greater Tuli region, which encompasses the Northern Tuli Game Reserve, is bounded by the Motloutse, the Shashe and Limpopo rivers in the northeastern corner of Botswana and the southwestern part of Zimbabwe. The region has a variety of landscapes, which fall into several broad categories... Beautiful riverine forests along the river banks and watercourses, particularly on the banks of the Limpopo, Motloutse and Shashe rivers, Karoo sandstone outcrops forming picturesque hillocks and buttresses, dolerite dykes - the most spectacular being Solomon's Wall - and Mopane savanna presenting vast vistas with clean horizons, magnificent sunsets and no sign of human habitation or excroachment.
Game viewing in the Tuli Reserve is excellent. There are around 600 elephants in the region, this being a high density for such a small area. The rocky terrain also provides superb habitat for leopards and other predators present here include lion, cheetah and wild dogs. Local specialties not often seen anywhere else in Botswana include the klipspringer antelope and the rock dassie. The birdlife in Tuli is also good due to the diversity of habitats for such a small area.

Mashatu Camps
Mashatu Game Reserve, Tuli Reserve, BotswanaIn the remote eastern corner of Botswana, at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers, lies an area known historically as the Tuli enclave - a diverse wilderness of savannah, riverine forests, marshland, open plains and sandstone outcrops. It is here that the largest of the Rattray Reserves is situated - Mashatu Game Reserve. The name is derived from the magnificent Mashatu trees, which occur throughout this immense tract of privately owned land. Mashatu is also the home of no less than seven of Africa's giants: the African elephant, the lion, giraffe, the baobab tree, the eland, the ostrich, and the kori bustard. It is fitting therefore, that some 75,000 acres / 30,000 hectares of pristine game land, be set aside for these unique, prodigious features of this exhilarating continent.
The wildlife experience at Mashatu is personalized. Dedicated, experienced Tswana rangers and trackers are keen to show you their world. Radio-linked 4-wheel drive vehicles, groups of mountain bicycles or horses set out at dawn and again at dusk in search of the diverse variety of fauna and flora which abound throughout the reserve. Whether you visit Mashatu for the excitement of the big game viewing, the relaxation of unspoiled Africa, or the quiet luxury of the camps, you will not be disappointed. |
